Albany Medical Center Medical Coding Specialist I in Albany, New York

Optimize hospital reimbursement by collecting and classifying diagnostic and procedural information from physicians and medical records. Apply ICD-10-CM and CPT coding to a patient’s insurance claim using the official coding guidelines. Comply with all regulations assigned by compliance for medical coding.


  • Code diagnostic and operative information from the record using ICD-10 and CPT4 classification systems.

  • Use a computerized encoding system to facilitate accurate coding.

  • Sequence diagnoses and procedures by following the ICD-10, CPT 4, Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set (UHDDS), Medicare, Medicaid and other fiscal intermediary guidelines.

  • Abstract medical data from the record to complete a discharge data abstract (DDA) on each medical record.

  • Code and abstract Emergency Department and other outpatient visits.

  • Complete/verify diagnostic, demographic and SPARCS information for submission to New York State Office of Health Systems Management (OHSM).

  • Enter patient information into computerized outpatient medical record databases.

  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of medical record abstract data prior to billing interface and claims submission.

  • Assign evaluation and management (E&M) codes and CPT procedure codes for Emergency Department Physician Professional services and technical components.

  • Assign ICD-10 diagnosis codes on radiology, apheresis and dialysis encounters as requested.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality.

  • Participate in training as required.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Graduate and completion of an official medical coding program or HIM related college program.

  • CCS, CCA or CPC credentials.

  • Ability to code hospital outpatient medical records include Emergency Department, Observation and Ambulatory Surgeries.

  • Understanding of Medicare and Medicaid guidelines.

  • Expert knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT4 classification systems.

  • Ability to abstract data elements from the medical record.

  • One to three years’ experience coding or graduate of the coding apprentice program.
