**POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES**

Position Overview:

The research technician is responsible for mouse colony maintenance (50%), ordering system maintenance (10%), lab safety regulation compliance (5%), mouse behavior experiments, stereotaxic surgery, in vivo calcium imaging experiments, data analysis (35%). Also, will collect pilot data and assist others in the lab regarding mouse social behavior experiments, viral infusion and fiber implant surgeries, and in vivo calcium imaging experiments. Will be expected to lead an independent research project with minimal supervision (perform, analyze, interpret experiments) to contribute to research publications.

Duties and responsibilities:

Mouse colony management (50%)

-Manage a large colony of 100 cages of transgenic mice. Requires understanding of mouse husbandry, genetics, excellent record keeping skills, and knowledge of humane weaning and tail biopsy procedures.

-Perform genotyping of each mouse. Requires understanding of DNA extraction, PCR-based amplification, gel electrophoresis, and densitometric imaging.

Ordering system maintenance (10%)

-Maintain inventories of supplies and equipment

-Maintain vendor information and follow up on orders

-Place orders through ePro system

Lab Safety Regulation Compliance (5%)

-Maintain safety standards in the lab. Requires knowledge of chemical and biological hazards and proper disposal practices and procedures.

Mouse experiments (35%)

-Conduct mouse behavior experiments. Requires knowledge of special testing apparatus and specific details about testing procedures including parental behavior, exploratory behavior, ingestive behavior etc.

-Perform stereotaxic surgery. Requires training on stereotaxic equipment, knowledge of brain anatomy, and training for handing and injecting viruses and implants. Training in sterile surgical procedures, anesthesia, and analgesic administration necessary.

-Run in vivo calcium imaging experiments. Requires training on photometry equipment and Matlab for data analysis. Quantitative programming background a plus.

**QUALIFICATIONS**

Required to have at least a Bachelor's Degree in a related science or equivalent skills or experience, and two to four and one half years of related experience.
