ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision of the Project HOPE Team Leader, performs crisis counseling to assist individuals and communities in understanding, coping with, and recovering from the effects of COVID-19. Project HOPE services include supportive crisis counseling and development of coping skills, while assessing and referring those members of the community who are in need of intensive mental health services. Crisis Counselor provides services around resource needs using a strength-based, outreach-oriented, culturally respectful approach to helping disaster survivors identify and access personal and community resources that will aid the recovery process. Crisis Counselor follows all policies and procedures that are provided through OMH training and complies with appropriate handling of confidential information related to case interviews. All work is conducted in a confidential manner. This is a full-time temporary, direct service, hybrid position, that will require candidate to report to work on-site as scheduled. Call center operating hours are initially planned as 8am-10pm, seven days per week. Crisis Counselor schedule may be staggered.
Works with individuals, families, and groups to provide outreach, emotional support, individual, group and crisis counseling, public education, and referrals when needed.
Conducts crisis counseling sessions to help individuals manage and cope with changes brought on by COVID 19; assists clients in understanding their reactions; developing coping strategies; managing their stress, and regaining a sense of mastery and control.
Assesses individuals or familys need for referral to additional social or mental health services.
Using various platforms, connects individuals with agencies and various resources that may assist them in improving their situation.
Refers individuals experiencing severe reactions to appropriate level of care.
Distributes flyers, brochures, tip sheets and web-based material to educate individuals and families.
Represents Project HOPE program in our communities and networks with other agencies and partners to ensure needs of individuals are met.
Provides presentations to community groups on disaster reactions, coping skills, stress management, and Project HOPE program services.
Communicates with individuals in a professional and empathetic manner.
Collects and records information obtained from the client and inputs data into the data system in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Follows approved scripts and protocols, provides clients with vetted information about local community resources.
Elevates complex cases to Team Leader.
Maintains daily communication with assigned Team Leader.
Recognizes, documents, and alerts the Team Leader of trends in client calls.
Protects and maintains individuals privacy andconfidentiality.
Manages assigned caseload and ensures prompt and accurate data entry and follow-up with cases.
Familiarity with and/or experience working in New York City health systems or social/human services field that can inform connecting clients to local resources.
Active listener who offers reassurance, practical assistance, and emotional support, and who can teach behavioral techniques for coping and stress.
Speaking more than one language fluently is an advantage.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally with people from diverse cultural, racial, ethnic, gender, and socioeconomic backgrounds during a time of crisis and distress.
Excellent organizational and communication skills.

Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.

Ability to show empathy and be nonjudgmental toward distressed individuals.
Ability to understand the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities.
Have a demonstrated commitment to supporting communities who have experienced systemic oppression and bias(e.g. people of color, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, justice involved persons, etc.).
Strong computer proficiency using standard office software programs required, in particular Microsoft Office
Ability to utilize technology in daily work; experience with web-based applications.
Access to wireless internet required at the location the Crisis Counselor will be remotely conducting their work. It will need to be assessed how best to ensure a reliable, fast internet connection.
New York City resident preferred and familiarity with New York City neighborhoods, communities, and boroughs required.

Minimum of high school diploma/HSE required. Trained paraprofessional or professional. Two years of coursework or equivalent experience in social or human services or related fields (social work, human services, community/public health, sociology, psychology, mental health counseling, or related field). ** Relevant years of experience and gained competencies will be considered as strongly as education during the interview process.
