Summary This position is in the Facilities Management Service, Engineering Section in the Maintenance and Operations Shop at the Canandaigua VA, of the Finger Lakes VA HCS. The primary purpose of the position involves journeyman painting work in support of activities of Engineering section. Performs maintenance, repairs, applications and installations associated with the painting trade throughout the Medical Center. Responsibilities Major duties include but are not limited to; Prepares multiple surfaces for painting. Levels imperfections, holes and scaling paint. Applies coating materials with any of the accepted trade devices, paints indoor and outdoor surfaces. Prepares drywall, wood, concrete and plaster types of surfaces, including finishing of new drywall construction. Touch-ups on walls, existing wooden and metal doors and metal and wood furniture. Ability to tint, tone and match surfaces. Meet's prescheduled times for re-locations; Conducts all necessary prior assessments of the scheduled room condition, execute furniture storage and moves and maintaining stock of an array of cabinets, chairs, furniture and desks etc. Setting up of chairs, desks and furniture. The incumbent will be required to assemble furniture and desks. Makes sound, well informed, and objective decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; commits to action, even in uncertain situations, to accomplish organizational goals; causes change. Must be skilled in the use of tools and equipment such as brushes, rollers, sponges, spray guns, trowels, screeds, straight edges 'viscosity testers and wet film and other thickness gauges when their specified. Ability to apply painting of stripes on roadways and parking lots to meet prescribed dimensions and layouts. Does proper maintenance on the Paint shops equipment. Ability to properly clean and store brushes, rollers and pans. Clean up the work site at end of the task or shift. Ability to read and interpret work orders instructions, complete assignment and correctly close the work order upon completion. Determine the methods, techniques, materials and devices best suited to obtain smooth-textured and decorative surfaces and ensuring that surface coatings meet level and thickness requirements. Ability to be familiar with the SDS "Safety Data Sheets". Notify Supervisor of all SDS's for any new materials acquired. Ability to identify hazardous materials, ingredients, reactivity and explosion hazards. Ability to keep track of shop materials on hand for your work. Be prepared for upcoming jobs, including proper communication with those affected by the painter's work. Keep your tool boxes and work carts, clean and in order and ready for daily tasks and assignments. Knowledge of the array of patching and filling materials best suited for each specific job. The Painter relates to other trade workers in engineering while doing assignments and inhouse projects. May have to work in conjunction with contractors, other services and Medical Center personnel, such as nurses Doctors, PSA's and Patients to complete projects. Knowledge of correct cleaning agents for different surfaces. Knowledge of the proper and safest application of such agents. Have ability to observe and follow Hospital safety regulations and VA polices accordingly. Knowledge of emergency procedures in case of a spill or on the job accident. Ability to measure out specific ingredients for paint mixing and matching. Ability to be trained on this facility's paint tinting and color matching equipment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Prepares and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, platforms, aerial platforms and where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets-up materials and equipment that weigh up to 5 kilograms (10 pounds). Occasionally, may handle materials and equipment that weigh 18 kilograms (40 pounds) and over. Using proper lifting techniques. The work is done inside and outside, and dirt, spray and fumes are usually present. May be required to prepare and coat surfaces outside in inclement weather. Wear safety shoes. May occasionally be required to wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. Understand product SDS's, stay current and use proper SDS safety precautions. Frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. May occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Physical or muscular effort in performing duties includes fatigue producing actions such as painting overhead, lifting, pulling, pushing, stooping and working in cramped positions. Must work in an area with unpleasant fumes and thus wear a face mask to prevent injury or illness due to fumes and dust. Ability to wear a respirator. Performs work from ladders and scaffolds. Education There are no education requirements for this position. Additional Information COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement.
