Summary

Perform job duties as outlined in the system wide Mechanic A-1 job description:

  • Operate and transport all Company owned and rented hydraulic and cable operated mobile cranes, under various operating conditions, within the limitations specified by the manufacturers

  • Crane operation requires a thorough knowledge of load chart interpretation, strengths of fiber and wire ropes, slings and shackle’s, electrical system, physical work clearances and transportation routes throughout the service area, including overhead clearance and special hauling permit requirements

  • Perform daily and monthly inspections of all company owned and rented cranes

  • Have knowledge of company and industry tools, equipment standards, rules, practices and have the ability to perform work safely in compliance with company safety requirements

  • Report to various work sites throughout the service territory

  • Cognizant of the hazards associated with moving heavy equipment including electrical and physical clearances, strength of materials and traffic safety

  • Read and interpret ordinary plans, drawings and specifications

  • Be familiar with field accounting requirements and be able to prepare the necessary forms, sketches and reports

  • Perform field surveys at the job site and prepare sketches detailing the relative positions of operating equipment and loads

  • Have the ability to learn new methods and techniques

  • Train and instruct lower grade personnel as required; Perform similar or less skilled duties as required

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Required Skills:

  • The ability to make arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals and percentages.

  • The ability to work at heights from a scaffold, scissor lift and other elevated platforms.

  • The ability to successfully pass written tests and the Mechanic A1 – Crane Operator screening exam: 3-part written test and cranes/rigging tests.

  • Four years’ crane operator experience, including at least two years rigging related experience

  • Possess valid NY State CDL Class ‘A’ driver’s license with a safe and satisfactory driver history

  • Possess a valid unrestricted NY State Crane Operator Certificate of Competence

  • Possess a valid NCCCO Crane Operator certificate

Desired Skills:

  • Possess a valid NCCCO Rigger Level 1 or 11 certificates
