What you’ll learn & achieve:

We are currently seeking a Circuit Design Research Engineer to join our team!

This position will be expected to conduct occasional forensic analysis of failed electronic products, printed wiring boards, battery management systems, etc. The successful candidate will be expected to be able to identify key subsystems on a printed wiring board and assemble a general understanding of its function from sometimes limited documentation. The candidate will then identify one or more likely root causes of failure and share this information in written and oral formats. Occasional printed wiring board design and fabrication will also be needed for novel testing solutions for UL’s customers or to implement new laboratory test capabilities within one of UL’s global laboratories. In addition to exercising these core skills, a variety of challenging projects and tasks will also be a regular part of this job, allowing for one to broaden their technical skills.

The successful candidate must have prior experience in circuit design (using SPICE or similar tools), printed wiring board layout (using Eagle or similar tools), electrical component selection (building custom bill-of-materials/BoM), and fabrication of small lots (<50) or boards using a fabrication supplier. It is expected that the candidate will conduct all steps of design independently with minimal input from manager and peers. Additional Responsibilities for a Circuit Design Research Engineer include:

  • Identifies fundamental knowledge needed to enhance UL’s industry and standards position and support the strategy of the aligned categories.

  • Applies intensive and diverse knowledge of engineering technology and systems engineering concepts to the specific research tasks. Exercises a high degree of judgment in formulating, evaluating, and correlating broad engineering research concepts and guiding the analysis of unique problems and developing new and improved techniques and methods.

  • Analyzes product data and laboratory test results in order to determine causes of problems and develop solutions, and evaluates technical specifications and factors related to process or design objectives.

  • Stays ahead of changing technologies, in the field by reading journals and scientific publications, attending academic conferences, writing and collaborating on original publications, and delivering presentations on research engineering topics.

  • Plan, design and complete initial and follow-up procedures as needed to test and validate results.

  • Collaborates with industry, academics and other research and development staff to apply the results of research used to develop new techniques, products, practices and UL Standards.

  • Maintain and develop extensive knowledge of current and new technologies for new products, as well as current needs and trends.

  • Performs other duties as directed.

What makes you a great fit:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering is required. Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering is preferred.

  • Five+ years of direct related work experience.

  • Experience in circuit design, printed wiring board layout, electrical component selection, and fabrication of small lots (<50) or boards using a fabrication supplier is required.

  • Experience in the consumer electronic manufacturing industry is preferred.

  • Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills, including preparation of detailed written research reports and technical presentations for a variety of target audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain professional networks both internally and externally.
