The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building is part of The New York Public Library, which consists of four major research libraries and 88 branch libraries located in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. Often referred to as the "main branch," the Beaux-Arts landmark building on Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street houses outstanding research collections in the humanities and social sciences as well as a circulating children’s collection.

NYPL is seeking a Porter to maintain an environment that is clean, safe and comfortable for our Library users and employees.


Under the general supervision of a Building Manager and/or Cleaning Operations Coordinator, the Porter:

  • Cleans all assigned areas in, around and outside NYPL buildings

  • Sweeps, scrubs, waxes and polishes floors, vacuums and shampoos carpets

  • Dusts furniture, book shelves and equipment

  • Handles snow removal

  • Transports trash or discarded materials to disposal area and push dumpsters to and from the curb for garbage and/or recycling collection

  • Move, remove, and/or setup furniture inside specified rooms for special functions as directed

  • May be assigned to any NYPL building

  • Performs related duties as required

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education

High School Diploma or GED and prior custodial experience

Required Skills

  • Knowledge of hazards and applicable safety rules by understanding Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and chemical mixing instructions to prevent injuries

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions

  • Ability to interact with others in a courteous and professional manner

  • Heavy lifting may be required

  • Must pass physical examination

Decision-Making Responsibilities:

Problem-solve maintenance issues as they arise

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of methods, materials, chemicals, disinfectants, and equipment used in janitorial work; and safety practices in janitorial work


Please Note: Effective August 2, 2021, absent a qualifying exception for medical or religious reasons, newly hired employees of the New York Public Library must present proof of receipt of a COVID-19 vaccination and may not begin employment at the Library until 14 days after their receipt of their second dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or 14 days after their first dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Newly hired employees who need additional time to receive their vaccination prior to their start date may request an adjournment of their start date with their hiring manager.
