Position Summary

The Senior Research Worker will provide high level research support including sophisticated cellular assays, FACS sorting, DNA extraction, high throughput sequencing and analysis of large data sets. In addition, the incumbent's time will be split between supporting postdoctoral research projects and conducting research on several human and large animal research projects involving collaborations with clinicians and researchers at Columbia and elsewhere.


  • Isolate tissues and stain for phenotyping for postdoctoral researchers

  • Maintain tissue culture room supplies needed to process tissues

  • Perform genotyping and phenotyping for entire swine colony

  • Process a variety of samples including blood, bone marrow, gut biopsies, or stoma pieces for PBMCs, IELs, and LPL

  • Thaw healthy control samples for using in staining panels

  • Stain processed samples with 18 colour flow cytometry antibody panels

  • Freeze biopsy pieces, or single cell suspensions

  • Update FreezerPro with Frozen samples

  • Titrate Human Group Antibodies

  • Participate in on call activities for human organ transplantation samples

  • Perform weekly PBMC isolation from whole blood or DNA isolation

  • Perform single color flow cytometry staining for SLA typing

  • Responsible for freezing vials of PBMCs/Updating FreezerPro with PBMC locations

  • Trouble shoot Swine SLA genotyping

  • Perform single color flow cytometry FlowJo staining analysis

  • Create the weekly typing report in Power Point to send for analysis

  • Perform fibroblast culturing

  • Order and maintain pig project supplies

  • Make Facs buffer, heat inactivating sera, and perform sterile filtering

  • Perform additional related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree and at least three years experience or Bachelor's degree and at least five years of related experience, or equivalent in education, training and experience

  • Ability to communicate with and train other lab staff

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with sophisticated cellular assays, FACS sorting, DNA extraction, reagent titration, high throughput sequencing and analysis of large data sets

Other Requirements

  • The candidate selected for this position is required to undergo a drug screening test prior to a final offer of employment being made
