The Durst Organization Sustainability Coordinator in New York, New York

The Sustainability Coordinator will support the Sustainability Team in the execution of responsibilities, centered around 5 areas of Integrated Sustainability Foci:

  • Employee Engagement

  • Sustainable Development

  • Tenant & Resident Engagement

  • Portfolio Operations

  • Green Building Certifications

The Sustainability Coordinator supports the implementation of practices in alignment with the four areas of the Company’s Sustainability Policy: Energy Efficiency, Indoor Environmental Quality, Water Efficiency, and Materials Stream Optimization. The Sustainability Coordinator will work collaboratively with others in Design, Construction, Engineering, Operations, and Project Development to help ensure sustainability objectives are integrated and adhered to during design, construction, and operations.

Serve as a resource, advocate, and catalyst for sustainability at The Durst Organization. Apply the skills unique to your core job responsibilities for practical integration of sustainability into processes, standard operating procedures, and adopted business practices. Seek to empower our colleagues, consultants, tenants and residents to prioritize and actively engage in environmental stewardship.

  • Support research and comparison of building products and construction systems with sustainability criteria

  • Help to maintain the internal building product database as well as the Durst Best in Class Product list

  • Aid effort to enhance and refine building product transparency and chemicals exclusion criteria, in effort to drive industry-wide market transformation

  • Support and lead ongoing collection and review of LEED and other environmental reporting from design and construction teams to ensure goals are achieved, schedule is maintained, and messaging is accurate

  • Support the regular review of Construction Quality site compliance with indoor air quality, recycling and reuse guidelines, as well as approved building product compliance

  • Support LEED EBOM recertifications as required

  • Aid in preparation of materials for sustainability engagement, for consultants, trade contractors, tenants, residents, internal colleagues, and external audiences

  • Support branding, marketing, and education efforts for prospective residents and tenants

    General Responsibilities:

  • Carry out routine tasks with little supervision

  • Communicate clearly, regularly, and congenially with internal and external team members

  • Act as liaison with external vendors and other departments as needed

  • Proactively follow up on tasks and deliverables with internal and external stakeholders

  • Participate in meetings as required

  • Record and distribute meeting agendas and minutes

  • Document key decisions and directions with oversight from Sustainability Team Members

  • Visit the project site and document on-site observations as needed

  • Ensure accurate maintenance of digital and paper filing systems using internal document management software and protocols

  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as requested by others in the Sustainability Department

  • Degree from an accredited institution, preferably in Architecture, Engineering, Real Estate, Environmental Science or equivalent

  • Experience in Sustainable Real Estate Development, Design, and/or Construction a plus

  • Background in building design and/or science and applied technical concepts, especially around building product performance, embodied carbon, supply chains, and health.

  • Possess passion for the subject matter, and for consistent improvement and optimization of the company’s practices

  • Strong attention to technical details

  • LEED Accreditation preferred

  • Desire to constantly build upon existing knowledge to empower design and construction teams and product manufactures, to meet desired project goals.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively and interface appropriately internally and externally in construction, design, academia, government, and manufacturing

  • Very strong written, visual, and oral communication skills

  • Self-Starting attitude to run with direction, and the independence to identify discoveries that align within defined parameters and goals

  • Familiarity with real-estate, design and construction terminology preferred

  • Applied knowledge of software platforms such as Bluebeam, AutoCAD, MS Office (including Excel), PowerPoint.
