The Atlantic Vice President, Engineering (The Atlantic) in New York, New York

Our VP of Engineering will be responsible for the technical strategy powering The Atlantic's digital products. Reporting to the SVP of Product and Engineering, the VP of Engineering will be tasked with leading and mentoring a diverse team of talented developers as well as recruiting for the growing team. They will be the senior-most technical leader at The Atlantic and will balance the need for continuity while also bringing new ideas to bear. This individual should have deep experience building teams and empowering each member to thrive, along with a proven track record of nurturing strong cross functional relationships.

The role works closely with leadership across Editorial, Growth and B2B teams to deeply understand the future of our business, and then move quickly to bring our vision to life. This position will guide the Engineering team through the launch of our new marketing tech stack, enabling rapid testing as well as sophisticated and tailored experiences. It will also lead the evolution of our CMS and storytelling tools, and the introduction of innovative new ad products. They will need to be comfortable with ambiguity and make decisions about how to move forward.

Additionally, this role will oversee the IT department, including desktop support, enterprise systems administration, and network administration.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage the engineering team, currently 24 developers and expected to grow to 35+, through a period of ongoing expansion and any associated reorganization.

Attract and retain key digital talent with a focus on building and empowering leaders, and managing managers.

Value and strongly focus on diversity, equity and inclusion to hire and retain staff.

Be a vocal and engaged participant in product strategy conversations with the executive team, including CEO, EIC, CRO and SVP of Growth.

Formalize, and clearly communicate, a vision for our technical roadmap that aligns with and delivers our Editorial and Product goals.

Collaborate with internal and external teams to focus on rapid growth and results.

Lead a comprehensive evaluation of and update to our publishing process, in close partnership with Editorial, including the evolution of our content management system.

Develop / enhance an industry reputation for technical innovation.

Shape and evolve our technical processes, particularly as we scale.

Work closely with the Legal team, set organizational security and privacy strategy and drive implementation across multiple teams.

Guide IT team through a separation from our legacy parent company and planned moves of DC and NYC offices in 2022.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum 8 years leading development teams showing an ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Expertise in deploying test driven development and automated testing across teams moving towards continuous delivery

Ability to speak to developers and laypersons alike

BS in Computer Science, Engineering or related field

Passion for the The Atlantic brand

Experience shaping and leading security efforts

Although we are operating in remote-only mode due to COVID-19 until at least July 2021, we are looking for a candidate who will be able to commute into our Washington, DC, or New York City offices when it is safe to do so.
