A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A REGISTERED NURSE

As a Registered Nurse you will perform duties within the NYSED Registered Nurse scope of practice, will assess health related needs of applicants and individuals attending day programs, while coordinating with health care/services providers, clinical and program staff to meet these needs. You will function as a member of the individual's program planning team to ensure that all medical/clinical and dietary needs are identified, and provided for in each individual service plan, will create and update individual nursing assessments, and will ensure that all medical/health concerns, treatments, and recommendations are properly documented and followed-up. Will interpret medical tests screenings and diagnosis to staff and team members, will participate in admission planning to ensure all health related needs, treatments, referral to other health related providers, and/or transfer/discharge planning with programs/hospital or agencies are met. You will perform admission and semi-annual review of medications, monitor its effects and will report to health care providers (as necessary), ensuring medications are properly ordered/renewed, while evaluating the individuals for self-administration of medication status and will monitor the self-administration of medication programs. You will coordinate medical/clinical appointments, will monitor immunization records, communicable diseases and infection control practice to ensure compliance with all regulations, policies and procedures, and will review medication errors, making recommendations to the management staff, providing direct and/or clinical supervision to both the Day Services LPN and staff. You will participate in Workers Compensation reporting process if applicable.

The Registered Nurse also provides and assists with:

  • Health related and dietary education to individuals.
  • Staff education and certification in health related areas, to include general medical overview and medication administration certification.
  • Nursing On-call triage coverage as directed by Nursing Administrator.
  • TB testing and monitoring of staff.
  • Follow up/evaluation of internal events and incident reports in health related areas.

Must possess the following education/credentials:

  • Current valid NYS licensure as a Registered Nurse.

Experience:

  • One year of nursing experience with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred.

WORK SCHEDULE

This is a full-time position that works Monday through Friday, 7:30am - 3:30pm (40 hours per week), with flexibility to meet program needs.
