Registered Nurse 2 South Job Summary:

Manages individualized, goal directed nursing care through use of the nursing process and the principles of primary nursing in accordance with departmental and Hospital policies and procedures.

Job Qualifications:

  • Education - BSN preferred

  • Experience - Minimum 2 years of acute care hospital, critical care experience is preferred

  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities - Demonstrated proficiency in acute care nursing, especially telemetry knowledge and skill. Ability to care for multiple & unstable patients. Flexibility in scheduling. Strong clinical assessment skills. Willing to fulfill role as charge RN. Proficient computer skills and documentation in an Electronic Medical Record format is desirable

  • Physical Requirements - 6-8 hours sitting/standing. Must be able to transfer, ambulate and reposition patients, able to lift up to 35 pounds.

  • Licenses/Certifications - Required: BLS and ACLS. PCCN or CCRN Preferred. New employee must complete certifications within six months of hire.

Essential Functions:

  • Independent discretion/decision making. Makes decisions under pressure.

  • Performs admission assessment within six hours of admission or in accordance with specific unit standards.

  • Identifies and documents patient’s plan of care within eight hours of admission in the EMR

  • Identifies and documents patient/family/significant other teaching needs upon admission

  • Identifies discharge planning needs of patient/family/significant other on admission.

  • Develops, discusses, and communicates a plan of care for each patient, in collaboration with each patient/family/significant other in order to address all identified needs.

  • Plan of care will include interventions and outcomes for each identified problem

  • Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to implement medical plan of care, nursing interventions, and procedures as necessary for the care of the patient.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of policies and procedures for administering, verifying, scanning and recording

  • Clearly assesses pain prior to and following pain medication administration & documents in EMR.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of commonly used meds: action, dose, and side effects.

  • Observes the five RIGHTS for administering meds: right patient, right drug, right dose, right route, and right time.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of policies and procedures for ACCU-Dose stations.

  • Administers blood and blood products following policy and procedures.

  • Initiates and maintains IV access according to policy and procedures.

  • Evaluates the identified problems, care provided, and patient’s responses are reassessed to meet patient and family needs to ensure overall quality of care delivered.

  • Reassessment of plan of care is done every shift and ongoing, until outcomes are met or discharge

  • Complete shift report at the patient’s bedside and include the patient when appropriate.

  • Performs all responsibilities/duties required by 2 South Universal Unit as defined in the scope of service, to ensure that the unique nature of the client is addressed. This includes, but is not limited to the age of the client served.

  • Properly demonstrates the ability to care for a patient with hemodynamic monitoring. Assists with insertion, monitoring, interpretation, and care of the catheter.

  • Demonstrates the ability to titrate intravenous medications according to the patient’s hemodynamic status/glucose levels and according to Provider orders.

  • Demonstrates the ability to care for the patient with continuous cardiac monitoring including rhythm identification, interpretation and follow through with appropriate intervention.

  • Demonstrates the ability to care for a ventilated patient.

  • Demonstrates the ability to care for the patient with a temporary pacemaker including insertion, monitoring,

  • Attends the General and Critical Care Skills fair annually.

  • Completes identified unit specific competencies.
