SPNY- Extrusion Technician

Description/Job Summary

An Extrusion Helper assists in the running of the Extrusion Department as needed and directed by the Lead Operator. The Helper is tasked with performing all assigned responsibilities in a timely and efficient manner, maintaining product run rate and quality, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Checks and keeps hoppers full with appropriate resin and additive material.
Monitors extruder hopper levels at all times.
Moves needed material to back of line; removes unused material.
Maintains a clean work area/department, maintains clearance in front of machines; performs regular floor sweeping.
Maintains the air hose between extruder lines.
Assists when line goes down as needed, rope tower, changes screens.
Keeps scrap picked up and out of the way; cuts down scrap rolls; weighs scrap boxes as required.
Assists with changeovers and line start-ups as required.
Cuts air out and removes fold-overs after line start-ups.
Completes blend verifications daily.
Learns contents of each silo.
Restarts the blenders.
Learns the types of additives and their function : UV, SL/AB, AB, Antistat, Booster, PA, Coca3
Maintains the proper additive mixes.
Performs proper blender clean-out and teardown; cleans loader filters.
Performs roping of all lines: 1, 2, 3A, 3B, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
Requires the ability to understand what extruder and additive hopper alarms mean, and takes action to clear those alarms.
Requires the ability to acknowledge blender panel alarms.
Requires the ability to identify different resin types and colors.
Requires the ability to understand VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory) additives.
Monitors grinder and trim roll feeders and keeps stocked at all times.
Maintains resin aisles neat and organized.
Stores the resin shipments in their proper location.
Completes resin and blender changeovers on big lines:3A, 4 and 8.
Adheres to and complies with Company safety policies and procedures.
Assists the management team in maintaining quality system effectiveness.
Performs all other tasks and projects as assigned by the Lead Operator and/or Extrusion Department Manager.

Organizational Relationships:
The Extrusion Department Helper reports directly to the Extrusion Lead Operator of the assigned shift, and maintains a direct working relationship with all levels of Salerno management and staff in the Plattsburgh and Chateauguay facilities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Requires the ability to perform all essential duties and responsibilities of the Extrusion Helper position.
Requires the ability to read and write English.
Requires good verbal and written communication skills.
Requires the ability to read and use a ruler and tape measure, and perform simple arithmetic functions consistently and accurately to include but not limited to the following: percentages, proportions, mass, volume, run rates.
Requires the ability to solve practical problems and be self directed within the framework of assigned job responsibilities.
Requires the ability to know when to ask for assistance when a problem arises that will affect the department performance and product quality.
Requires the ability to work varied shifts depending on organizational requirements and customer commitments.
Entry level computer skills acceptable.

Credentials and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
Experience in factory/shift work preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the helper is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel material. This position requires the ability to see/hear warning alarms. This job also requires walking, stooping, climbing stairs, bending and twisting, and kneeling.

Work Environment:
The work environment described here is representative of those an employee would encounter on a daily basis while performing the job functions.
This position works a 12/hour shift.The schedules includes day and night work as well as weekends and holidays.It can also include overtime when needed.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to extreme heat and high noise levels.Working on an open air secured floor may be required.
