Research and Development (70%)

  • The fabricating of high-fidelity perfused hydrogel organs for surgical simulation. This process involves:

  • Segmenting patients’ DICOM images to a 3d mesh using Mimics Innovation Suite

  • Converting the 3d mesh into computer-assisted designs (CAD) using Autodesk Meshmixer

  • Optimizing the CAD by smoothing, and removing artifacts

  • Ensuring accuracy of the CAD in comparison to the patients imaging

  • Designing injection molds from the CAD of the patient anatomy

  • 3D printing of the various molds for structures in each organ

  • Fabrication of the various structures including hollow vessels for perfusion

  • Registering the fabricated structures into their corresponding molds

  • Injecting and processing the hydrogel to fabricate the organ

  • Ensuring accuracy of the organ and its lack of defects

  • Layering organs into the body cast to create the surgical rehearsal platform

  • Supervising the surgical rehearsal

  • Design and fabrication of generic models for novice training. These models include (put in everything urology and non -urology)

  • Partial Nephrectomy

  • Prostate Nerve Sparing

  • Advanced trainer (robotic and open)

  • Pelvic Lymph node dissection

  • Major Vascular Injury (robotic and open)

  • Cholecysectomy

  • Hysterectomy

  • Biomechanical testing of various PVA formulations to create a realistic texture for each of the components of the fabricated organs.

  • Testing types

  • unconfined compression testing

  • Hertzian Indentation testing

  • Uniaxial tension testing

  • elastography testing

  • puncture testing

  • Samples

  • Porcine testing mainly for kidney models

  • Bovine testing for live models

  • Recently testing of fresh frozen cadavers

  • Device: Instron 5960: Electromechanical Universal Testing Instrument. The most common uses of these mechanical testing systems are for tensile, compression, bend, peel, shear, tear and cyclic tests.

  • Analysis of data

  • Prototyping new models, a new model is developed almost every 6 months. The process involves

  • Interfacing with customer to gather design specifications

  • Review of current literature and advances in the field

  • Presenting a digital design

  • Testing of various components of the simulation (partial teak trainers)

  • Delivering the first prototype

  • Interfacing with customer in a hands-on session to gather modification specifications

  • Delivering the final prototype

  • Attending the simulations in person to obtain 1st hand feedback from the surgeons

  • Focus groups with expert surgeons

  • Create and implement new research protocol.

  • Recommend solutions/revisions to the study team in order to focus the aims of the study

  • Design the protocol around abilities of participants

  • Confirm expectations of models to be produced

  • Gather data during each simulation

  • Draft research papers and grant proposals.

  • Present methods

  • Analyze data and arrange into meaningful figures

Personnel and Laboratory Management (25%)

  • Responsible for scheduling, prioritizing and supervising implementation of the multiple projects in the laboratory, ensuring their completion at the required deadline, and maintaining supply inventory. Handle purchasing decision for all supplies, materials, and capital equipment. Financial oversight of program budget.

  • Manages interns, student employees and new hires in the laboratory. Is responsible for assigning duties, supervising their work, and ensuring proper training.

  • Current personnel supervised:

  • (1) Full time Lab Technician (40 hrs/week)

  • (1) Full time Co-op student (40 hrs/week)

  • (2) Part time student lab technicians (20 hrs/week each)

  • (4) Student Interns (10-15 hrs/week each)

  • Develops recruitment strategies and targets based on demand for lab services. Screens potential members of the laboratory by reviewing applications and qualifications of the specific position description.

Regulatory Compliance (5%)

  • (5%) Ensures the integrity and security of all study data at all times. Follow laboratory regulations and ensure compliance with institution requirements.


Bachelor’s degree with major course work in field of assignment, Master’s degree with major course work in field of assignment, and 3 years of related work experience involving direct assistance to researchers; or any equivalent combination of experience, training, and education.
